Sofia Stutesman is a dynamic trombonist known for making her trombone sing. Whether playing with the elegance of classical music and or the soulfulness of jazz, she brings a unique voice to the trombone, blending technical prowess with expressive artistry. Drawing inspiration from trombone legends like Rita Payés, Megumi Kanda, and Melba Liston, she has developed a distinctive sound that resonates with audiences across genres.
Growing up in a home where a different song played in every room, Sofia was influenced by a variety of musical styles early on. Mandated by her mother, a choral and general music teacher, she began piano lessons at the age of five, and kept playing because her teacher encouraged her desire to learn songs from the soundtrack of Doctor Who. This sparked a love for music that led her to pick up the trombone at the age of eleven.
Beginning her studies by learning a mixture of classical, jazz and band music, her first formal lessons were from tubist Dr. Micheal Forbes at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, in her hometown. She is now pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Trombone Performance at the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the studio of Mark Hetzler, a former member of the Empire Brass.
With a passion for exploring new musical territories, and a dedication to expressive performance, Sofia continues to inspire and engage audiences, leaving an indelible mark on the musical landscape.
